Language Placement

Students with prior knowledge of a Slavic language, either from home or previous study, must take a placement test before enrolling in a course. Incoming new students needing placement in Polish or Russian should take the online test by June 11th. Results will be made June 14th-18th. When required an oral interview or reassessment is also during June 14th-18th. Any students accepted into Northwestern later this summer and also transfer students should complete the Polish or Russian placement test by August 27th. For this round, results will be made September 1st-3rd. When required an oral interview or reassessment for this round is also during September 1st-3rd. See: http://placement-test.mmlc.northwestern.edu/taketest/.

The placement test consists of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and short essay. It is intended to establish placement for somewhere during the first-year of Polish or Russian language study all the way through advanced classes as well as whether a foreign language requirement may be fulfilled. Thus, some sections are focused on advanced proficiency. There is nothing to study in preparation. Students should give themselves 2 hours to do the online portion. If you are extremely struggling in a certain section, try to do your best and try to do at least some of such sections, so that the evaluators will be able to have some sense of your knowledge. Oral interviews, when required, are typically about 20 mins and start in English and then eventually switch to either Polish or Russian depending on the relevant test. Students will be contacted by email about scheduling a Zoom meeting for a follow-up oral interview.

Students interested in placement tests in other Slavic languages (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Bulgarian, or Macedonian) should contact Professor Elisabeth Elliott to arrange these. Students should not place themselves into a language class without permission from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.
