Saint Mary's College Placement Tests

Online tests for students of French, German, Italian, & Spanish

Welcome to the Saint Mary's College online placement tests for French, German, Italian, and Spanish, hosted by Northwestern University. From this site you can learn more about the resources you will need for the French, German, Italian and Spanish tests (a printout of how to make accents on your computer) before you begin. After you have completed your test, your test will be scored immediately. To view your score, you click the link “placement results” on this page. Your score and your test information will be sent to the Academic Affairs and First Year Studies Office and to the appropriate language coordinator in the Department of Modern Languages who will review your score and overall performance and provide you with your placement result.
Technical Requirements button Before you begin your test, be sure to download (and print, if possible) an accent sheet! Answers with missing accents and other diacritical marks are scored as incorrect, so please be sure to include them in your answers when required.

Placement results The Academic Affairs and First Year Studies Office will place you in the appropriate French, German, Italian, or Spanish class. NOTE: This link will allow you to obtain only your test score, not your placement.

* The tests may be unavailable during periods of regularly scheduled maintenance between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. CDT, Saturday mornings. Outside of this period, unforeseen circumstances relating to system and network availability, or other technical issues may also preclude access to some or all of the tests.
